Club History 1 of 2

1. Club History Overview

Frensham Cricket Club was formed in 1899 and was one of the first in the I’Anson league – which itself was 100 years old in 2001. In 1939 the club moved from the nearby Pierrepont Estate to Hollowdene Recreation Ground, where in 1954 the present amphitheatre was completed.

Until the 1950’s tea was eaten and players changed under a tree. The first pavilion was then built to which additions have been made over the years resulting in the excellent facility that the club now enjoys. Another landmark occurred in 1980, when the Club cut out a second square at Hollowdene allowing two matches to be played at home at the same time.

Like most clubs, Frensham’s fortunes have fluctuated, but for more than a decade the Club has been one of the strongest in the league. Since winning the I’Anson Cup for the first time in 1932, the club had to wait until 1986 for its next success. However, since then the club has won the cup a further eleven times. The second team has won the Miller Cup three times in recent years and the Stevens Cup twice. For a number of years the Club has entered the National Village Knockout and had several highly successful runs, reaching the last 16 in 2000.

The Club has run colt sides for many years. It has for long been one of the focal points in the village running numerous social events. The most memorable of these being a series of pantomimes starting in 1989 and ending in the centenary year.

In recent years the club has enjoyed great success. It won the Division One championship, the I’Anson Cup, two years running in 2008 and 2009, and was runner-up by single point on a rain affected final day of the season in 2011. The club also won the Pope Cup for a fourth time, in 2015.

Our Sunday XI is also much sought after, with many clubs travelling far and wide to enjoy our excellent facilities and the ambience of the Hollowdene Rec.
